DAVID O'SHEA
David O'Shea: Maggie’s father was born in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and spent his youth on the estate owned by his family—the Weald. At 10, tragedy struck. David witnessed his cousin and best friend, Kyle, fall to his death from a 90-foot bluff. Two years later, David’s parents were killed in a violent car wreck, leaving him to be raised by his Aunt May. Through the remainder of his childhood, he withdrew from everyone except Aunt May. David kept up outward appearances, but after graduating from the University of Arkansas, he found a job in Miami and left Arkansas—too many painful memories and too much rotten luck. Handsome, bright, but damaged, even in Florida David avoided emotional attachments with anyone other than May, as the people he cared about the most rarely stayed around, or survived. That changed when he met Elena. His heart raced out of his chest at her sight, her scent drove him mad. David became extremely protective of Elena, in the darkest hours of night, begging God to spare her the fate of his other loved ones. His devotion only grew more powerful, bordering on obsessive, when his children were born.

Life seemed perfect, but when he lost his job David began to struggle with old doubts. The situation in Florida went from bad to worse, and David fought for composure. Aunt May asked him to return to Eureka Springs to live with her, to help her, as age was making it impossible to manage the family estate by herself. Only when the bank took his home did he consider the offer. Driven by his loyalty to Aunt May and his desire to keep his family from starving, David made the painful decision to return to Arkansas; a place he loved, but one where he'd known pain. Suffering silently, the move back to the Weald would prove harder on him than anyone.
